On 8th July 2026, a significant discussion was held at the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) between Major General (Retd) Sampath Kotuwegoda, Director General of the DMC, and Professor Rohan Fernando, Chairman of the National Science and Technology Commission (NASTEC), accompanied by officials from both institutions.
The meeting focused on preparations for BICOST X 2026, which will be held under the theme โScience-driven Disaster Resilience.โ The discussions emphasized the importance of strengthening collaborations between NASTEC and the DMC, recognizing the DMC as the leading national agency mandated with implementing and coordinating disaster risk reduction programmes at both national and sub-national levels, with the active participation of all relevant stakeholders.
This engagement highlighted the shared commitment of both institutions to harness science, technology, and innovation in building a safer and more resilient Sri Lanka. The collaboration will ensure that scientific insights and evidence-based approaches are integrated into disaster management strategies, thereby enhancing preparedness, response, and recovery capacities across the country.
